#2511 - how Tan Weiwei declared domestic vioence in china through music

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

Our project is called #2511 - How Tan Weiwei declared domestic vioence in China through music- to celebrate the date of the day against violence against women.

We decided to focus on a specific part of violence which is domestic violence, specifically domestic violence in China. The problem of domestic violence is still a huge problem in China, in fact we found out that every 7.4 minutes women are subjected to violence from their partner, but only in 2016 was created the anti-domestic violence law to protect the victims, with legal basis, even it still has some weaknesses. Given that this is still a serious problematic in this country, we decided to focus on a chinese singer and songwriter, Tan Wei Wei, who wrote an entire music album based on denouncing the problem of domestic violence in China. The album is called 3811, 38 is her age and 11 are the women who inspired her songs. (this where the name of our project comes). We concentred on her most famous song, Xiao Juan, that talks about actual cases of domestic violence happened in the country. Her goal was to speak up about the issue, remembering the victims and denouncing the fact that these cases are not reported with transparency.

The instrument we chose to use is an informative video through which we can display our analysis and interpretation of the song Xiao Juan, with the ultimate goal of showing the improvements to change, at least partially, the situation in China.

In conclusion, we chose this theme to distance ourselves from the topic of women journalists and talk about violence in a different perspective. We’ve chosen specifically China because we have a Chinese member and we think suppose a phenomenon under a different culture might be a though-provoking topic.
